What were you doing exactly a year ago? For me, I was hiking 11 miles down the grand canyon and into the Indian Reservation of the Havasupai Tribe.
I remember how exhausted I was on the way down. After about 8 miles I wasn't sure if I could walk any longer. We had carried our own packs in and left the top of the canyon at 3 PM on a VERY SUNNY and VERY HOT summer day. That was mistake #1. Mistake #2 was not hiring the pack mules to carry our 30-50 lb (or more) packs down for us. Ugh. I recall this passage I wrote upon returning from the trip on my blog.
It was 8 miles in. We had just got to the havasupi tribe. We had 2 more miles to go....
I was about ready to pass out - no food since breakfast, ran out of water and too much heat. The last mile to the camp ground was a steep down hill trek but we got to pass the amazing waterfalls of Navajo and Havasu Falls. WOW. What sights. We made it to the camp ground and started looking for our friend. It got dark quick and it took a while to find her. We found a camp site that wasn't really great but ok. We'd look for a better one in the morning. By this time I was doing better and started to make dinner. Andy on the other hand was not. He just laid in the tent and was feeling horrible.
Sounds awful right? It may have been one of the hardest thing I've ever done, and ranks right up with Ragnar, but it was seriously amazing. We took the helicoper out and that was completely worth it. It was an amazing trip and seriously pushed me to my limits but I'd do it again in a heart beat.
